Q. What does a typical day look like for a Lead ISO Auditor?
A Lead ISO Auditor’s day depends heavily on the client and the audit scope. Typically, the day begins by reviewing the audit plan and the client’s documentation. This is followed by an opening meeting to clarify the scope and objectives.
The core of the day involves process walkthroughs — interviewing staff, reviewing records, and observing operations to evaluate conformance to ISO standards. Findings are documented in real-time, and the day concludes with a closing meeting to present results, including any non-conformities or opportunities for improvement.
Q: What are some of the most common issues or gaps you find during internal audits?
Some recurring issues include:
Lack of evidence of management review or ineffective meetings.
Outdated or poorly defined procedures.
Risk assessments treated as a tick-box exercise.
Lack of employee awareness of quality or IMS objectives.
Weak supplier/subcontractor control.
Q: How do you approach auditing in a way that adds value to the client, beyond just ticking the compliance boxes?
My approach is to understand the client’s business objectives first and align the audit to support those goals. I ask reflective questions like “Is this process helping you meet your targets?” and “Is this control effective, or just habitual?” I aim to identify systemic issues, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies, and I share relevant best practices from other industries (while maintaining confidentiality).
Q: Can you share a memorable audit experience – a challenge you faced and how you overcame it?
One memorable experience was auditing a manufacturing company where the team was initially defensive. They viewed audits as confrontational. I adapted my tone and clarified in the opening meeting that the audit was about improvement, not blame. Sharing positive observations early helped build trust. By the end, the team was actively discussing gaps and proposing improvements – a real shift in mindset.
Q: How do you stay up to date with changing ISO standards and best practices?
With changes like the upcoming ISO 9001:2026 revision, staying current is essential. I subscribe to ISO and IAF updates, join forums, attend webinars, and use networking platforms like LinkedIn. It’s not just about compliance, but understanding the intent of changes and how to apply them practically.
Q: What advice would you give to a company preparing for their first ISO internal audit?
Ensure your processes are clearly documented and understood – not just for the auditor, but internally. Do a gap analysis, avoid generic templates, and tailor procedures to your operations. Train staff on the purpose and process of the audit. Most importantly, view the audit as a tool for improvement, not as a test. Be honest – auditors are here to help, not catch you out.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your role as a Lead Auditor?
I enjoy seeing how different organisations operate and supporting their improvement journeys. Every audit is unique, and I’m always learning. It’s rewarding when clients see audits as opportunities for growth. Helping shift that perspective is incredibly fulfilling.
