From 20 November 2023, new legislation will come into force in Ireland requiring all operators of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), including quad bikes, to complete certified ATV safety training and wear a protective helmet. This change follows an amendment to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations (SI 299/2007) and aims to reduce accidents and fatalities linked to quad use in the workplace.
Changes when driving an ATV
Past HSA investigations pinpointed a lack of training and no head protection as the main cause of accidents. The new legislation will mean that all users of ATVs in connection with their work will be obliged to undergo mandatory training and wear head protection.
An amendment was made to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations SI 299/2007, to introduce two new requirements for anyone operating an ATV or quad:
All quad operators must complete an all-terrain vehicle safety training course from a registered training provider.
Operators must wear a protective helmet while using a quad.
The legislation is aimed at reducing the number of accidents involving ATVs, ultimately saving lives.
What does the training involve?
Participants of an authorised ATV training course will gain the knowledge, skills and attitude to operate an ATV in a competent and safe manner. Upon completion, they will receive a certificate of competence valid for five years.
Our professional course covers:
Machine safety and legal responsibilities
Vehicle inspection and maintenance
Riding techniques across terrain types

All-terrain vehicle courses
Comply with legal requirements and promote a culture of safety by completing a Dynamic Safety Solutions ATV training course.
