Course Overview

This Location of Underground Services (LUGS) training course is designed to ensure operatives are fully aware of the hazards associated with excavation work, especially those involving underground utilities and services. The course equips candidates with the practical skills and knowledge needed to carry out safe and accurate investigations before excavation begins.

Course Objectives 

The objective is to provide participants with the skills and understanding necessary to conduct investigations into underground utilities—including electricity cables, gas lines, and water mains—before starting any groundworks or road-cutting operations where these services may be present.

Who Should Attend?

This course is suited for:

  • Candidates aged 18 or over with a valid Safe Pass card

  • Individuals who hold a valid Irish PPS Number (PPSN)

  • Those with a good command of English (a SOLAS-approved interpreter is required otherwise)

  • Operatives with prior experience dealing with the location of underground services

Note: This course is for operatives who do not currently hold a CSCS ticket for underground services.

Course Content

Participants will receive comprehensive training covering:

  • Introduction to relevant Irish health and safety legislation

  • Hazards and risks associated with different underground services

  • Safe working procedures for service detection and excavation

  • Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) Modes – Power, Radio, Genny

  • Proper use of CAT – Searching, Pinpointing, Tracing

  • Proper use of GENNY – Induction, Direct Connection, Clamping

  • Troubleshooting – Lost signals, nulling out, and depth finding

  • Safety in excavations and safe backfilling procedures

  • Signing, lighting, and guarding requirements

  • Health and Safety guidelines for working on public roads

  • Practical test using CAT & GENNY equipment

  • Final multiple-choice exam and course completion

To book a place on the course, please provide:

  1. A copy of the candidate’s in-date Safe Pass card (must be presented on the course day).

  2. A completed Candidate Pack Form (link), confirming at least 9 months of relevant roadworks experience within the last 2 years. All sections must be fully completed.

  3. A Previous Card Holder Declaration (link) – as per SOLAS requirements, if you have previously completed this course, you cannot retake it. If your CSCS card has expired, you must apply for a new one via https://cardrenewals.solas.ie and pay the renewal fee.
